How to measure SEO results: the metrics that matter

"How do I know if SEO is working?" It's the fairest question anyone investing in SEO can ask. The answer isn't a single number but a chain: first Google shows you more, then more people click, then more people get in touch, and finally more people buy.
This guide explains what to measure at each link of the chain, with which free tools, and what to expect over time.
The SEO chain
- Visibility: does Google show you for the searches that matter?
- Clicks: do people choose your result?
- Quality visits: do they like what they find?
- Enquiries: do they message, call or book?
- Sales: do those enquiries become customers?
The early stages move first; the later ones are the ones that pay. A good report shows all of them.
1. Visibility: impressions and position
In Google Search Console (see how to use it):
- Impressions: how many times your site appeared in results.
- Average position: where it appeared on average.
- Queries: which searches it appears for.
Rather than the position of a single keyword, look at whether impressions are growing for searches that matter to your business. It's the first sign the work is paying off, and it usually moves before clicks.
2. Clicks and CTR
Also in Search Console:
- Clicks from Google to your site.
- CTR: the percentage of impressions that become clicks.
If impressions go up but clicks don't, review your titles and descriptions (see titles that get clicks).
3. Quality visits
In Google Analytics, filter organic search traffic and look at:
- Organic visits over time.
- Engagement: whether people read, browse other pages or leave right away.
- Landing pages: which pages attract visits from Google.
4. Enquiries: the most important metric for a service business
Set up Analytics to record the actions that matter:
- Contact form submissions.
- WhatsApp button clicks.
- Phone number clicks.
- Bookings or appointments.
That way you know how many enquiries came from Google each month. Also ask every new customer how they found you: many people see your site and then message you directly on WhatsApp or call.
5. Sales
The last step, and the hardest to measure precisely. Some approaches:
- Online stores: Analytics can record sales and where they came from.
- Services: note in your system or a spreadsheet where each customer came from and the value of the job.
- Local businesses: your Business Profile dashboard shows calls, direction requests and messages.
With that, you can estimate the return: what customers who came through Google generated versus what you invested in SEO.
What to expect month by month
Every site is different, but the sequence usually goes:
- Month one: groundwork (technical, profile, pages). Few visible changes.
- Months two and three: impressions rise and new searches appear. Local improvements start showing on the map.
- Months three to six: clicks and enquiries grow more visibly, especially for specific searches.
- After that: growth compounds with content and reputation.
In very competitive searches, it can all take longer. Be wary of anyone who promises guaranteed results by a set date.
Misleading metrics
- The position of a single keyword: it varies with each person's location and device. Look at the trend across many searches instead.
- Total visits: they can rise from searches that never bring you customers.
- "Domain authority" from third-party tools: it's those tools' estimate, not a Google metric.
A useful monthly report
Ask for (or build yourself) a report that answers:
- How did impressions, clicks and position change versus last month?
- Which searches and pages grew?
- How many enquiries came from Google?
- What was done this month, and what's planned for next month?
Frequently asked questions
How often should I check results?
Once a month is enough. Daily changes are mostly noise.
Why did my visits drop if I'm doing SEO?
It could be seasonality, a Google update, competitors or a technical problem. Compare with the same period last year and check Search Console before drawing conclusions.
How do I know how many customers came from Google if they message me on WhatsApp?
Track WhatsApp button clicks in Analytics and ask each customer how they found you.
