SEO for home services: plumbers, electricians, painters and builders

A plumber, an electrician and a painter walk toward different houses in a Costa Rican neighborhood

A burst pipe on a Sunday, a breaker that keeps tripping, a damp wall, a kitchen remodel. When something goes wrong at home, most people search on their phone: "plumber near me", "electrician in Alajuela", "house painter in Heredia". Many of these searches are urgent, and people call the first business that inspires confidence.

For plumbers, electricians, painters, builders, air conditioning technicians, locksmiths or gardeners, local SEO can be the most reliable source of customers. Here's how to make the most of it.

1. A Business Profile set up as a service-area business

If you work at customers' homes and don't receive clients at your premises, set up your Google Business Profile as a service-area business:

  • Hide your home address and set the areas you serve (cantons or provinces).
  • Choose the exact category: "Plumber", "Electrician", "Painter", "General contractor", "Air conditioning repair service".
  • Show your real hours and whether you take emergencies.
  • List each service with a short description.
  • Use a phone number you actually answer, ideally with WhatsApp.

2. Reviews: proof you can be trusted

Letting someone into your home takes trust, and reviews build it more than anything else. Ask for a review when you finish each job, for example by WhatsApp with your direct link, while the customer is happy. Reply to all of them. Reviews that mention the type of job and the area ("fixed the leak at my house in San Pablo the same day") also help Google connect you with those searches. See Google reviews.

3. Photos of your work

Photos of real jobs sell better than any text:

  • Before and after each project (with the customer's permission, and without showing details of their home).
  • Your branded vehicle and equipment.
  • You and your team at work, in uniform if you have one.

Upload them to your profile regularly and use them on your website.

4. One page per service (and per area, where it makes sense)

On your website, create a page for each important service: "Leak detection", "Water heater installation", "Rewiring", "Roof painting". On each:

  • What's included and how long it usually takes.
  • What the price depends on (or an indicative range, if you publish it).
  • The areas you serve.
  • Photos of jobs of that type.
  • A visible button to call or message on WhatsApp.

If you serve several areas, area pages can help, but only if you have something specific to say about each one (response times, jobs done there). Pages copied with only the canton name changed don't help.

5. Ready for emergencies

Someone with a leak doesn't read long pages. Your site should:

  • Show the phone and WhatsApp button at the top of the screen on mobile.
  • Say clearly whether you handle emergencies, and when.
  • Load fast even on a weak signal (see website speed).

6. Content that answers common questions

Simple articles bring customers in before they call and show you know your trade:

  • "Why does my breaker keep tripping, and when should I call an electrician?"
  • "How much does it cost to paint a house in Costa Rica, and what does it depend on?"
  • "How to find a hidden water leak"

Ideas in niche content.

7. Directories and mentions

Make sure your details are the same on Facebook, Instagram, Waze, trade directories and the websites of suppliers you work with (hardware stores, distributors). Ask suppliers to include you on their list of recommended technicians if they have one. See local links.

Common mistakes

  • Showing your home address instead of setting up a service area.
  • Keywords in the business name on your profile.
  • Not asking for reviews when the job's done.
  • Using photos from the internet instead of your own work.
  • No visible call button on mobile.

Frequently asked questions

Does an independent technician need a website?

Not to get started: a complete Google profile with reviews can bring in customers. But a simple site with your services and photos of your work helps you show up in more searches and win more jobs.

Can I show up in areas far from where I live?

On the map, Google favors proximity. For areas further away, create pages on your site that explain you serve that area and show jobs done there.

How long does it take?

A well-configured profile with new reviews can start bringing calls within a few weeks, depending on competition in your area.
