Local SEO in Costa Rica: a complete guide to local search

Local SEO in Costa Rica

When someone searches for "pharmacy open now", "auto body shop" or "restaurant in Santa Ana", Google understands they want something nearby. Instead of a plain list of pages, it shows a map with three businesses, their rating, their hours and a button to call or get directions. That block, the local pack, takes a large share of the clicks.

Local SEO is the work of showing up there, and in the organic results for your area. For most Costa Rican businesses that serve customers in person or at their homes, it's the part of SEO that turns into customers fastest.

How Google decides which businesses to show

Google describes it in terms of three factors:

  1. Relevance: how well your business matches what was searched. It depends on your category, your services and the content of your profile and website.
  2. Distance: how close you are to the person, or to the area they mentioned in the search.
  3. Prominence: how well known and well regarded your business is: reviews, mentions on other sites, links, presence across the web.

You can't change distance, but you can work on relevance and prominence.

1. Your Google Business Profile

This is the foundation of local SEO. It should be verified, with the right primary category, an accurate pin, hours (including holidays), services, attributes and real photos. We cover every step in our Google Business Profile guide.

2. Reviews

They're one of the most visible prominence signals and one of the main reasons someone chooses one business over another. Ask every customer, steadily, and reply to all of them. No incentives or filtering: Google prohibits both. More in Google reviews.

3. Consistent details everywhere

Your business name, address and phone number should be identical on your website, your Google profile, Facebook, Instagram, Waze, Apple Maps and any directory you appear in. Differences (an old phone number, a slightly different address) confuse both Google and customers.

In Costa Rica, where addresses are written with landmarks, pick one way of writing yours and use it the same way everywhere.

4. Local pages on your website

Your website should back up what your profile says:

  • One page per service, with the area in the title where it applies ("Pest control in Heredia").
  • If you serve several areas, area pages only where you have something specific to say about each: response times, past projects, local conditions. Identical pages that only swap the canton name don't help and can hurt.
  • A contact page with your address, map, hours and phone number in text (not just in an image).
  • LocalBusiness structured data with your business details.

5. Local keywords

People search in different ways: "dentist Escazú", "dentist near me", "dentist open Saturday". Use the words your customers use on your pages, including Costa Rican expressions if your customers are local. See Costa Rican Spanish words.

You don't need to write "near me" on your site: Google handles that part using the searcher's location. If you compete in a crowded area, see our guide to SEO in Escazú.

6. Local links and mentions

Mentions on sites from your area and your industry build prominence: business chambers, associations, municipalities, regional media, suppliers, community events. More in local links.

7. Mobile

Local searches happen mostly on phones, often on the move. Your site should load fast, show your phone number and WhatsApp button right away, and open your location in Google Maps or Waze with one tap.

How to measure local SEO

  • Business Profile: the performance dashboard shows searches, calls, direction requests, website clicks and messages.
  • Search Console: the local searches that bring people to your website.
  • Your own records: ask every new customer how they found you.

Common mistakes

  • Adding keywords to the business name on your profile.
  • Using an address where you don't serve customers.
  • Duplicate profiles.
  • Buying reviews or only asking happy customers.
  • Area pages copied from one another.
  • Not updating hours on public holidays.

Frequently asked questions

Can I show up on the map in an area where I have no location?

The local pack favors proximity. If you serve customers at their homes, set up your profile as a service-area business. For other areas, work on organic results with dedicated pages on your website.

How long does local SEO take to work?

A complete, well-configured profile can improve your visibility within a few weeks. Reviews and links add up over time.

My business doesn't show up on the map. What should I do?

Check verification, category, pin location and duplicate profiles. We cover each cause in business not showing on Google Maps.

Do I need a website if I already have a Business Profile?

The profile can work on its own, but a website adds relevance, lets you appear in organic searches and gives customers more information to decide.
