How to choose an SEO agency in Costa Rica (and what to ask)

A business owner compares three proposal folders on his desk

Hiring an SEO agency is a decision that spans several months and a meaningful investment. The problem is that from the outside, every proposal sounds the same: "we'll grow your traffic", "we'll get you on Google", "tailored strategies". This guide helps you compare properly: what a serious agency should offer, what to ask before signing, and which signs mean you should keep looking.

Yes, we're an SEO agency. That's exactly why we think a client who knows what to ask is a better client for everyone.

First: do you need an agency?

Not always. Before hiring, consider:

  • If your business is small and local, you can get a long way on your own with your Google Business Profile, reviews and a clear page for each service.
  • If you have an in-house team, SEO consulting that gives them direction may be enough.
  • If you don't have the time or team, or you're in a tough market (tourism, health, professional services, ecommerce), an agency can make sense.

What a serious agency should offer

  • An audit before the monthly proposal. Without looking at your site, nobody can know what you need.
  • Clear priorities: what gets done first, and why.
  • Concrete monthly deliverables: pages, articles, technical improvements, local profile management, mentions.
  • Clarity on who implements: the agency, your developer or your team.
  • Reports you understand, with business results (enquiries, calls, bookings, sales), not just rankings.
  • Knowledge of the local market, Costa Rican vocabulary and, if you need it, English-speaking searchers.
  • Clear terms: price, minimum commitment, what happens if you stop, and who owns the content created.

The questions worth asking

Two people talk at a table with question bubbles about calendars, results, documents and agreements
  1. What did you review on my site, and what did you find? A good agency can give you concrete examples from the first conversation.
  2. What exactly will you do in month one? And month three?
  3. Who will work on my account? Agency staff, or subcontractors?
  4. How do you get links? If the answer involves buying them or "private networks", that's a risk.
  5. How is success measured? Which metrics will you report, and how often?
  6. What do you need from me? Access, approvals, information, my team's time.
  7. What's the minimum commitment, and how do I end the contract?
  8. If we part ways, what do I keep? The content and access to Search Console, Analytics and your Business Profile should be in your company's name.
  9. Can you show me verifiable past work? Real sites you can check, not just anonymous percentages.

Red flags

A clear path with blue flags and a foggy one with warning signs and fake gold coins
  • They guarantee first place or a position by a set date. Nobody controls Google's results.
  • They promise instant results in competitive searches.
  • Prices far below the market with promises far above it. It usually means little real work or risky practices.
  • "Thousands of backlinks" as a selling point.
  • They won't explain what they do ("it's secret", "it's technical").
  • Success stories with no names and no way to verify them.
  • They keep accounts in their own name, so if you leave, you lose your history.
  • Long contracts with no way out from day one.

How to compare proposals

Put the proposals side by side and compare:

What to compare Question
Audit Did they review my site before quoting?
Scope What's delivered each month, specifically?
Implementation Who makes the changes?
Measurement What's reported, and how often?
Price What's included and what's extra? With or without VAT?
Commitment How many months minimum?
Ownership Are the accounts and content in my name?

The cheapest price is rarely the best value if the work doesn't get done. For reference, we publish our prices in how much SEO costs in Costa Rica.

Frequently asked questions

How long should I give an agency?

It's reasonable to evaluate after about three months: by then the groundwork should be done and the first signs visible in Search Console. Strong growth in competitive searches usually takes longer.

Is a local agency better than an international one?

A local agency usually understands Costa Rican vocabulary, addresses, search behavior and the market better. For international markets, what matters is that they can work in the target country's language and context.

SEO agency or digital marketing agency?

Many marketing agencies offer SEO as one service among many. What matters is who does the work and whether they have specific SEO experience, not the agency's label.

What happens to my site if I switch agencies?

If the accounts are in your company's name and you own the content, you shouldn't lose anything. Make sure of that from the start.
