What is SEO? A clear guide for businesses

What is SEO?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. It's the work done on a website, and beyond it, so that it shows up in Google's results (and other search engines') when someone searches for what that site offers.

Put simply: SEO aims to make sure that when someone types "employment lawyer in San José" or "coffee tour in Naranjo", your business is among the options they see, and that when they click, they find what they were looking for.

What is SEO for?

To attract people who are already looking for what you offer. That's the big difference from other channels: it doesn't interrupt anyone, it answers a need the person already has. That's why visitors from Google usually have a clear intent: to learn, compare, buy, book or call.

What SEO covers

  • Content: pages that answer what people search for, using the words they actually use.
  • Technical SEO: making sure Google can find, understand and show your site; that it loads fast and works well on mobile. More in our technical SEO guide.
  • Local SEO: showing up on the map and in nearby searches, thanks to your Google Business Profile and reviews.
  • Authority: mentions and links from other trustworthy sites.
  • Measurement: knowing which searches bring visits and which turn into customers.

SEO vs. advertising

SEO Search ads (Google Ads)
How you pay With work and time Per click
When it delivers In weeks or months Immediately
If you stop investing What you've built keeps working for a while Visibility stops
Where it shows Organic results and the map Spots labeled "Sponsored"

They're not mutually exclusive. Many businesses use ads for immediate results and SEO to reduce their dependence on paid traffic over time. We compare them in detail in Google Ads vs SEO.

What SEO can do for a business

  • Visitors with intent: people searching for exactly what you offer.
  • A cost that doesn't grow with every click: unlike ads, each organic visit has no direct cost.
  • Trust: many people trust organic results and businesses with good reviews more.
  • An asset that builds up: the content and reputation you build keep working.
  • A better site for everyone: what helps SEO (speed, clarity, good content) also improves your customers' experience.
  • Insight into your market: searches tell you what people need and how they ask for it.

What SEO isn't

  • It isn't instant. It takes time and consistency.
  • It isn't a trick. Techniques to "fool" Google (hidden text, bought links, copied content) can make your site lose visibility.
  • It isn't a guarantee of first place. Nobody controls Google's results. Anyone who promises it isn't being honest.
  • It isn't one-and-done. Your competitors and Google change; the work continues.

Who needs SEO?

Almost any business whose customers search Google before buying: professional services, health, tourism, retail, online stores, education, construction. The type of work varies: a workshop mainly needs local SEO; an online store needs to work on its catalog (ecommerce SEO); a hotel needs English searches (SEO for tourism).
